Children of Italian citizens, even if born abroad, are Italian citizens and therefore their birth must also be registered in Italy.
Birth registration
- Allows registration in the Registry of Italians Resident Abroad (A.I.R.E.) (more information here)
- It is a necessary requirement for an eventual application for an Italian passport
Requirements to register a birth
- Parents must be residents of the Consulate District (more information here)
- At least one of the parents must hold Italian citizenship and be registered with A.I.R.E.
Documents
To register the birth of your child born in the United Kingdom you need a Certified Copy of an Entry of Birth issued by the Registry Office. The birth certificate must be apostilled in order to be transcribed in Italy. For the Apostille, the competent body is the Legalization Office of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Translation
- If registering the birth through the Italian Consulate in the UK you must submit a simple translation of the document and follow the Consulate’s procedure (click here).
- If the registration takes place at an Italian Municipality you must proceed with a sworn translation.
Importance of sworn translation
The sworn translation of the birth certificate from English to Italian is a fundamental requirement for registration at the Italian registry office. This document is needed for various administrative procedures, such as obtaining citizenship, registering children at school, and many others.
Steps for obtaining a Sworn Translation
- Send the Original Birth Certificate
If you proceed with a sworn translation at an Italian court, you must necessarily send the original document to our office either by hand or by post. The original apostilled birth certificate must be attached to the sworn translation.
2. Translation and Oath
The sworn translator will proceed with the translation of the document and subsequently swear an oath before a public officer of the court. This oath certifies that the translation is faithful and complete to the original document.
3. Receive the translated and sworn document
After taking the oath, we will provide you with the sworn translation of the birth certificate. This document will be legally valid and can be used for registration at the Italian registry office.
Advantages of Sworn Translations
- Legal Validity: The sworn translation is legally recognised by the Italian authorities and can be used for all administrative procedures.
- Accuracy: Sworn translators are experts in legal terminology and guarantee an accurate and reliable translation.
- Compliance: By using a professional service, you ensure that the translated document complies with all Italian regulations.
